They will either hurt you or benefit you.
I take them whenever I can, but without compromising the quality of final work.

The tools of course!
You've got to pick the right tools for the job.
You don't have to go through the painful process of optimizing and UV-ing, etc., every time you want to texture a model.
You need to pick your battles.
The same goes to modeling.
You do not need to spend hours to create something that will spice up your portfolio.
